Best lunch boxes and accessories

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Lunches can be so stressful! Here are are my favorite lunchboxes, containers and accessories that make things easier.

COLD
For those who love sandwiches and multi-compartments, Yumbox Tapas works really well. The sandwich part of the container is slightly small, so I like to use a thin-sliced bread like Dave’s Killer Thin Sliced. This size is ideal for 5 to adult. If they are a true sandwich lover, then you should consider the Panino version that has a larger sandwich section. For younger toddlers, I liked using the Yumbox original, which is smaller with more compartments.

HOT
For those who like hot lunches, the Omiebox bento is my current go-to. It gives you the compartments, but also a small hot thermos section. To keep food warm, I suggest putting in hot, boiling water inside for 5-10 minutes and cover to warm up the container, then put in the food. The food doesn’t stay hot, however, it does keep warm, which at a young age is fine since they don’t like it hot anyway.

The utensil accessory kit used to come with it, but now I believe you purchase it separately. I like the silicone add-on, however I prefer to use my own metal utensils inside.

For older kids, a larger thermos works best. This Zojirushi thermos is great, and really does keep food warm for 12 hrs once preheated. I like using this one on car rides or for myself.

SNACKS
For afterschool snack, I like the Sistema boxes. This two-compartment box is great to have some fruit on one side and crackers on the other.

LUNCH BAGS
For summer, it’s great to keep the foods cold using the this PackIt lunch bag. You freeze the entire bag and don’t need a separate ice pack! They also make a cute snack bag, which I often use to hold a yogurt and snacks.

About This Site

To all our friends with kids of similar age or for those who are just starting out—we wanted a place to share our stories and tips with you (+ hear yours).

Here are the best things we’ve learned, experienced, made, and bought to stay sane as “newbie” parents.

You’ll find recipes, toys, books, travel and local tips — basically any parenting advice we found useful.

We’re a small family living in DC. Pretty much all posts have been written by an insomniac, sleep-deprived mom at 3am, so please forgive any poorly written nonsense.

Other great cities we’ve called home —San Francisco, Mountain View, Amsterdam, Los Angeles and New York.

Thanks for stopping by!
